Today begins your mythological journey with a visit to Munneswaram Temple in Chilaw, a revered Shiva temple where Lord Rama is believed to have prayed for forgiveness after defeating Ravana. Continue the scenic drive along the eastern coast to Trincomalee, home to one of Sri Lanka’s most spiritually significant temples. Overnight stay in Trincomalee.
After breakfast, visit the iconic Koneswaram Temple, perched on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is closely associated with Ravana’s devotion. Later, visit the Hot Springs of Kanniya, believed to have been created by Ravana himself. Enjoy some leisure time at Nilaveli or Uppuveli beach. Overnight stay in Trincomalee.
Travel inland to the sacred city of Kandy, the cultural heart of Sri Lanka. En route, enjoy beautiful landscapes and stop at Hindu shrines or spice gardens if time permits. In the evening, witness a cultural dance performance and visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism’s most revered sites. Overnight stay in Kandy.
Depart Kandy and travel to Ramboda, where the presence of Lord Hanuman is said to have been strongest during the Ramayana. Visit the Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple, nestled among hills and tea plantations. Continue to Nuwara Eliya, also known as “Little England”, and enjoy the cool climate and colonial charm. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.
Today is the highlight of your Ramayana trail. Visit the Seetha Amman Temple in Seetha Eliya, believed to be the exact spot where Sita was held captive by Ravana. Nearby lies Ashok Vatika, the grove where Sita spent her days, now part of the Hakgala Botanical Gardens. Visit Divurumpola, the site where Sita is said to have undergone her “Agni Pariksha” (trial by fire). Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.
Head to the scenic highlands of Ella, closely linked to Ravana’s legend. Visit the dramatic Ravana Falls and explore the mystical Ravana Cave, where Ravana is said to have hidden Sita. Enjoy panoramic views of lush valleys and rolling tea estates. If time permits, hike up Little Adam’s Peak for sunset. Overnight stay in Ella.
After breakfast, journey back to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant commercial capital. Along the way, reflect on your spiritual trail across the island. Upon arrival, enjoy a short orientation tour of Colombo, visiting Independence Square, Galle Face Green, and Colombo Hindu temples such as Sri Kailawasanathar Swami Devasthanam.
