After breakfast, begin your spiritual trail with a journey to Anuradhapura, the sacred city and first capital of ancient Sri Lanka. Discover some of the island’s most revered Buddhist sites, including the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, and the grand Jetavanaramaya complex. As the sun sets, enjoy the peaceful aura of a city steeped in spirituality. Overnight in Anuradhapura.
Depart Anuradhapura and travel toward Dambulla. Stop en route to explore traditional village life or an optional visit to the Ritigala forest monastery. In the afternoon, climb to the stunning Dambulla Cave Temple, adorned with colorful murals and hundreds of Buddha statues. Check in to your hotel near Sigiriya/Dambulla for the night.
Today’s route takes you through the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka. Visit a spice garden in Matale, where age-old herbal remedies and aromatic blends come alive. Arrive in Kandy, the sacred city of the last Sinhalese kings. In the evening, visit the revered Temple of the Tooth Relic and witness the evening pooja (ceremonial offering). Enjoy a cultural dance performance before settling in for your overnight stay in Kandy.
Begin your day with a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, followed by a walk around Kandy Lake and exploration of colonial streets. Visit the British Garrison Cemetery or stop by a gem museum to learn about Sri Lanka’s gemstone legacy. You may also explore the Bahirawakanda Buddha statue viewpoint for panoramic city views. Journey into Sri Lanka’s misty hills with a scenic drive to Nuwara Eliya, also known as “Little England”. Stop at a tea factory and plantation to witness the traditional tea-making process. Upon arrival, stroll around Gregory Lake, admire old British architecture, and visit the colonial-era post office and golf club. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.
Spend the day uncovering Nuwara Eliya’s colonial legacies. Visit Seetha Amman Temple, believed to be a site from the Ramayana, and explore Hakgala Botanical Gardens. You can also opt for a hike in Horton Plains National Park to experience the World’s End viewpoint. Return to Nuwara Eliya for a cozy highland evening. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya.
Board one of the world’s most scenic train rides from Nanu Oya to Ella. Pass through lush tea fields, rolling hills, and picturesque villages. On arrival, enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of Ella. Visit Nine Arches Bridge, walk to Little Adam’s Peak, or simply unwind in a local café. Overnight stay in Ella.
Depart Ella and descend toward Sri Lanka’s southern coast, heading to the historic city of Galle. Arrive by late afternoon and settle into a charming colonial hotel within or near the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy an evening stroll along the ramparts as the sun dips into the Indian Ocean. Overnight stay in Galle.
Explore the beautifully preserved Galle Fort, originally built by the Portuguese and later fortified by the Dutch. Walk along cobblestone streets lined with colonial mansions, boutique galleries, and historic churches. Visit the Galle Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. After breakfast, return to Colombo via the southern expressway. Depending on your flight time, enjoy a brief city tour covering Independence Square, Old Parliament, and shopping spots like Odel or Paradise Road. Transfer to the airport for your departure with fond memories of Sri Lanka’s sacred temples and colonial tales.
